Behind the scenes of ANOK!
ANOK! is a coming-of-age film following three British girls and their punk band, Girlgasm, after a house fire threatens their plans to perform in Paris.
The piece was created as director-writer-editor Sophia Wilson's thesis at the Emerson College and the Paris College of Art's joint Global BFA program.
Director's Statement
"I wrote the film ANOK! after fleeing from a toxic household. The hardest part of leaving wasn’t the loss of lodging but the loss of my best friend. I couldn’t stop mourning my old life, so I burned it all down.
In my film, the house fire is the inciting incident, but it is also a visual manifestation of what it feels like to leave a home behind, knowing you can never return. As alluded to throughout the film, the main character, Madison, comes from a broken familial environment. Through her, I wanted to explore the fallout that lingers beyond the monumental parts of leaving.
Every moment is a fight. Every moment is a decision. Every moment, Madison can count on her friends for support. I only survived this hardship because of the support of my friends, and I wanted to emulate those critical relationships. It was because of them and the making of this film that I was able to move on."
