Shallow is a coming-of-age short that explores the difficult stigma that surround adolescent men in their expression of vulnerability.
With a surrealistic climax and bittersweet resolution, it challenges the viewer to question their own perception of healthy masculine relationships and biases towards gender roles.
In the year since the project was shot, behind-the-scenes material from the set of “Shallow” has attracted the awareness of a combined 7+ million views across only half a dozen TikTok posts.
This attention has brought about discussion from tens of thousands of commenters, engaging in the crucial dialogue that surrounds platonic intimacy, toxic masculinity, and relationships between young men in our society.

Behind the scenes of Shallow

With the cast & crew composed almost entirely of college students from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, “Shallow” was a zero-budget passion project made out of love for the craft and dedication to spreading the story’s message.
We hope to take the next step by sharing “Shallow” abroad to continue participating in the dialogue surrounding the roles that toxic masculinity and patriarchy play in harming adolescent men.
